Ncell confers Scholarship, Excellence Awards

As the new Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Ncell on Thursday (June 12, 2014) announced Ncell Scholarships and Excellence Awards of Rs 8 million at Central Campus Pulchowk, Institute of Engineering (IOE), aiming to promote technical education and contribute to the development of skilled human resources.

The Ncell Scholarships and Excellence Awards have been instated for five years. Under this, Ncell will annually provide 12 scholarships and 4 awards to the toppers of Electricals, Electronics and Computer Engineering Departments of the campus.

The Scholarships and Awards carry a purse of Rs 100,000 each.

“High-skilled technical human resources hold key to innovations and drive knowledge-based economy. Ncell Scholarships and Excellence Awards is our response to the need of the country -- support technological education and contribute to the development of skilled technical human resources,” said Erim Taylanlar, CEO of Ncell.

Ncell Scholarships fundamentally aim to free the best brains from financial burden, so that they could focus on academic excellence. Likewise, Ncell Excellence Awards aim to recognize and felicitate the academic talents, said Sanju Koirala, corporate communication director of Ncell.

Arvinda Kumar Mishra, campus chief of Central Campus Pulchowk, IOE, elaborated that the scholarships and awards are designed to promote meritocracy, as those are decided based on top annual scores.

Under this, 4 students of each batch, including 3 toppers of each Electricals, Electronics and Computer faculties and 1 female topper among all female students of these three faculties will receive scholarships.

“Scholarships will be decided based on annual scores of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year and the toppers will receive them for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year respectively. Ncell Excellence Awards, on the other hand, will be given to the pass outs, graduating with top scores in those faculties,” said Mishra.

As in case of Ncell Scholarships, Ncell Excellence Awards will be given to the graduates passing out with top scores from each of these faculties and also to 1 female student graduating with top scores among all female students of these three faculties.

“This special category for female toppers aim at encouraging female education,” said Koirala.

Ncell has been supporting education, placing it at the top of its priority in Corporate Social Responsibility since 2010. Under this, 14 girls of remote districts of Karnali and other rural districts, who got good grades among female students in SLC, but faced financial difficulties to continue further education, are currently pursuing higher education under Ncell Girls Scholarships.

Likewise, Ncell has established 13 digital libraries in different community schools, aiming to support digital education, and separated helped 42 community schools to build classrooms and other educational infrastructures and equip them with basic facilities like toilets, drinking water and sports, among others, aiming to improving educational environment in rural community schools.

Together, Ncell has invested Rs 66 million to the communities under educational support till 2013, and these supports have enabled more than 25,000 students to get education in better educational environment. With the fresh announcement, Ncell’s support to education has crossed over Rs 74 million.
